Old Fort Community Building, 1940s

This big rock building at the corner of Catawba Avenue and Water Street initially served as the town’s community building. Men employed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) built the stone structure in 1937 with river rocks from Mill Creek. A library once occupied the west end of the building, which also served as an inn before becoming the Mountain Gateway Museum.
