Blackberry dumpling pie with ice cream in a bowl

Blackberry Dumplin' Pie

A fun, fruity dessert!

This recipe was featured on our monthly social media series, "Flavors of the Mountain Past."

Like many of us, colonial Southern Appalachians enjoyed refreshing berry desserts in the summer too! Blackberries and raspberries were harvested in midsummer, and people took advantage by making sweet treats. A popular one is blackberry dumplin’ pie. Like a cobbler, the fruit mixture is cooked with dough; however, with a blackberry dumplin’ pie, the dumplings are dropped into the boiling fruit and syrup. The pie pairs well with ice cream or whipped cream and can be made with most berries.
