On the morning of September 27, Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina, bringing heavy rains and wind gusts up to 75 miles per hour. Many people lost their homes, businesses, and lives. While this event brought much sadness it also showed the community spirit of those living in Western N.C.

Currently the museum is working to capture the experiences of those who witnessed the hurricane and its aftermath with an oral history project. If you wish, you can share your story with us and it will be stored at the N.C. State Archives for public research. To learn more or participate, contact Carly Collins at carly.collins@dncr.nc.gov.
