During the MGM Farmers' Market on July 18, come learn how to make a bark basket with craftsman Joe Williams. A sixth-generation basket-maker and longtime craft demonstrator at both the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh and the Mountain State Fair in Fletcher, Williams will teach the first 15 people to register for the class how to make a bark-covered berry basket with handle, using all natural materials. The berry basket-making class will begin at 2:30 p.m. If the weather is nice, the class will be held outdoors; otherwise, it will be held inside the museum’s ca. 1885 Morgan cabin. The registration fee of $20 per person covers the costs of all materials and will be collected at the beginning of instruction. Students can then purchase berries, or other goods, at the MGM Farmers’ Market to take home in their new baskets. To register, call the museum at 828-668-9259 or email us at mgm@ncdcr.gov with the subject line "Basket Class". Please let us know how many plan on attending.
